New EV Video - 2021 Hyundai IONIQ 5

Video Road Report

The future of SUVs is here, courtesy of Hyundai - this is the IONIQ 5, an eagerly anticipated, all-electric range of futureproofed vehicles for the travellers of tomorrow.

IONIQ 5 is an SUV, though it is styled to look like a hatchback and – to be fair to the designers – it fulfils this intention very well. Part of this comes about through one of the – currently – unique features of the IONIQ 5 – the electric-Global Modular Platform – or E-GMP.

Hyundai will use this platform on other vehicles as it increases its electric vehicle product range, since it integrates the Hyundai's battery between the chassis rails for improved safety, enhanced handling characteristics, faster charging of larger capacity batteries and greater levels of passenger comfort with the increased room in the passenger space.

It also allows for greater flexibility in body design, which brings us back to the hatchback-esque design of the IONIQ 5 with its somewhat striking pixel motif found cohesively on the exterior and the interior of the vehicle.

With more space, more tech, more flexibility and more intuitive placement of instruments and control, the IONIQ 5’s interior is like no other, despite there being some familiar concepts like the twinning of 12.3 -inch display screens and a clever combination of real and touch sensitive buttons. Hyundai has also ensured IONIQ 5 is a five-star safety rated vehicle under the latest testing regime.

IONIQ 5 has a wealth of safety features bundled under the SmartSense active driver assistance umbrella, supplemented by a full complement of seven airbags, including a forward centre bag for driver and passenger safety.

If there is one real defining characteristic of the IONIQ 5 – other than being safe, visually striking and technologically advanced in terms of its electric technology – it is comfort for all occupants, extending to sophisticated in-cabin luxury and passenger-friendly suspension setup.

IONIQ 5 comes in a variety of models, starting with the 58kWH battery and electric motor driving the rear wheels entry model, and a further four models with 72kWh batteries in either 2WD or AWD (twin electric motors on each axle) in both Elite and top end Limited specification grades.

Introducing the Hyundai IONIQ 5 range – a new concept in lifestyle transport.
