2017 Mitsubishi Triton 2WD GLX-R

Video Road Report

We video test the 2017 Mitsubishi Triton 2WD GLX-R.

While top end, high spec utes get all the glory these days, there is still very much a need for the traditional work ute. After all, that is still what a lot of them are used for.

But thanks to the rise of the ute as a passenger vehicle, a lot of the niceties usually associated with cars have found their way into the segment, with a lot of those now working their way down through the ranges into those traditional work utes. And that is exactly where the Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R comes in.

The GLX-R is powered by the same 135kW/437Nm 2.4-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine as the rest of the Triton range, which is hooked up to either a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual transmission.

Because a ute is still a necessary work tool, the GLX-R can haul 3,000kg on a braked trailer and carry 995kg in its tray, but because that no longer means you need to have something basic and stripped out, it also comes standard with a number of niceties that haven’t always been common on traditional workhorses of the past.

These include 17-inch alloy wheels,  daytime running lights, rear privacy glass, cruise control, Bluetooth phone connectivity and media streaming, air conditioning, a reversing camera and a 6-inch touchscreen infotainment system.

All of this makes for a package that is more than capable of handling a tradies workload, but doesn’t skimp on the modern luxuries that we now expect in even our work utes.

The GLX-R is currently being offered with some extremely good lease deals, making it even more attractive to the business and fleet sector, while it also comes standard with Mitsubishi’s industry leading 10 year Diamond Advantage warranty, making it an attractive package that also makes a lot of financial sense.
