2020 Mitsubishi ASX - Video Road Report

Video Road Report

We video test the 2020 Mitsubishi ASX 2WD VRX

Mitsubishi’s ASX has the enviable reputation of being the top selling small SUV, which is no minor achievement, given the highly competitive nature and its very full dance card of other manufacturer represented in the segment.

The ASX has proven a formidable package with an outstanding level of appeal from a diverse range of buyers, not least of which are fleet buyers.

However, it would be remiss for Mitsubishi to rest on the laurels of the ASX’s success, especially when there are more and more competitors entering the market. Accordingly, ASX has been significantly upgraded for the 2020 model year, not only adopting the new family face of Mitsubishi – as seen on the equally successful Triton workhorse – but cementing it firmly into place in our market

The ‘Dynamic Shield’ not only redefines the shape of the ASX overall, it’s aggressive look inviting a sense of adventure on the part of the driver, it also integrates a new stylish design of LED headlight and a bold new driving light/indicator cluster. But that’s only part of the story.

As with the Triton, the chiseled look of the Dynamic Shield hides a significant secret; for the ASX in its VRX specification, that is the adoption of a 2.4-litre petrol engine, mated to a six-speed stepped CVT transmission with paddle shifters. The 2.4 MIVEC engine takes the ASX into new territory of smooth, refined power, matching the sophistication now found in the cabin.

This includes a new 8-inch touchscreen with Smartphone Link display that is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible to aid with the Bluetooth telephony with voice activation.

All ASX models are 5-star ANCAP safety rated, though the VRX really pushes the boat out, incorporating Mitsubishi’s RISE impact safety body design, Lane departure and blind spot monitoring as well as Forward collision mitigation braking system and rear cross traffic alert.

A new look, new design, new engine and new features will take the new ASX into a New Year, with the intention of staying at the top of the segment for the discerning small SUV buyer.
