2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Hybrid

Video Road Report

We video review the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Hybrid

Toyota’s 12th generation Corolla started as a two-year ‘rolla-out’, with the hatchback model variant the first one out of the blocks. The hatchback launch introduced the concept of hybrid technology to the Corolla line for the first time and cemented the mild-hybrid into the Toyota buyer’s psyche as Toyota’s ‘go to’ power technology for the mainstream buyer.

Accordingly, the hatchback came to us in three grades, GX, SX and ZR, although at the time, it was only the GX and top end ZR models equipped with hybrid tech.  The SX hybrid (tested) came in later, but it now forms an integral element of the range.

At time of launch, the entry-priced GX hybrid did allow Toyota to introduce hybrid tech with affordability as a draw card on the one hand and showcase the top end performance and technology – with the ZR – on the other. However, the introduction of the hybrid tech to the SX was only a matter of time, and by 2020, hybrids run through the Corolla hatch and sedan ranges at every grade level.

Thus we come to the SX, mid-grade hatchback with the full benefits of Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA) for exceptional handling, the hybrid technology for economy and emissions efficiency and of course, the advanced Toyota suite of safety equipment, which covers both active and passive considerations.

For this reason, you’ll find blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, voice recognition, reversing cameras and road sign recognition. Satellite navigation with SUNA traffic updates is also available from SX grades up.

The Corolla hatchback is lower, wider and longer than the preceding model, which not only contributes to its aerodynamic efficiency, it also appeals to the next generation of Corolla buyers looking for change and excitement in design, but with the assurance of the consistent quality that comes with 50 years of proven history.
