New Small Car Test Video - 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan

Video Road Report

We video review the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla Sedan

Within the generation 12 Corolla range is the car which clearly and cleanly bridges the gap between the Corolla and the next step up – the Camry. It’s rare to find such a clean step between models, but in saying that, the Corolla sedan retains its family connection with its hatch and wagon stablemates.

There is no mistaking the sedan as a Corolla, though the slight differentiation in the headlights, suggests there is something else here. The sedan lacks the forward motion lines inherent in the hatchback and the wagon, accentuating the length of the sedan’s body as a full-size car. But the forward motion lines are the only things the sedan hybrid could be accused of lacking.

There is no ZR performance version for the sedan, but the SX specification in the sedan is not by any means a decaffeinated version of the Corolla line. Indeed, the sedan feels more refined on the interior than either the hatch or the wagon, which again suggests a closer kinship with a mid-sized model, such as the Camry.

The same could be said for the extraordinary amount of boot space the sedan has to offer. There is 470 litres worth of space in the boot of the sedan, near on double that of the hatch and half that of the wagon, in a car which does not compromise on rear seat accommodations any more than it does not compromise on safety.

But it is the fuel economy which is the remarkable factor of the Corolla sedan. Toyota is claiming a 3.5 litres per 100km combined fuel figure which distinguishes the Corolla sedan from its stablemates and its larger Camry cousin. In fact, the Corolla sedan’s fuel figure is closer to the smaller and recently released Toyota Yaris, which again, demonstrates the bridging ability of the well specified – and refreshing – Corolla sedan.
