Overall Car of the Year 2024 - Honda HR-V

News

What a year it’s been for the NZ automotive industry and what a line-up of vehicles took their places as our judge’s picks of category winners. From the rugged and industrial, ute and van winners (Mitsubishi Triton and Peugeot E-Expert respectively) to the exceptional executive Mercedes-Benz E-Class – and everything in-between (Suzuki Swift, VW Tiguan, Hyundai Santa Fe & BYD Sealion 6), picking our ‘Overall Car of the Year’ was a head scratcher, causing sleepless nights and bitten fingernails.
Our choice this year came from the incredibly busy compact/small SUV category, an area that has proven over the years to be a popular fleet favourite – so the Company Vehicle Car of the Year for 2024 is the new Honda HR-V.
The Hi-Rider Revolutionary Vehicle or HR-V has been MIA in NZ for 2.5-years so its return is both welcomed and due to its evident desirability – required. Yes the HR-V is back, and with its new styling, improved NVH and an e:HEV hybrid powertrain, this latest (3.5) generation Honda HR-V is the best yet.
‘Fit for purpose’ is the main thing we focus on when we put vehicles under our microscope and whether for business or leisure the new HR-V excels. One of the most compelling aspects of the HR-V is its embodiment of the “expand your life” philosophy, striking a perfect balance between functionality and style. The sleek, aerodynamic exterior design with its clean lines and premium aesthetic distinguishes the HR-V in its class, while its dynamic presence is further emphasised by the newly narrowed width that gives the wheels a more pronounced, confident stance.
Inside, the HR-V mirrors the exterior’s streamlined elegance with an interior that exudes simplicity and modernity. High-quality materials such as combination leather-appointed seats contribute to a premium feel, with a unique rear two-seat configuration enhancing comfort by transforming the space into a cosy lounge-like environment.
Honda has also made strides in reducing cabin noise and vibration through acoustic front glass and innovative foam fillers, delivering a serene interior environment. Visibility has been enhanced, offering expansive views of the surrounding landscape, making every journey enjoyable.
But for business-owners and accountants, it’s what’s under the bonnet that really caused a stir. The HR-V is available exclusively as an e:HEV hybrid, combining a 1.5L two-motor system with an e-CVT electronic control continuously variable fixed gear transmission. This hybrid setup delivers notable efficiency with a combined consumption of 4.3L/100km and emissions of just 98g/km, while providing spirited performance.
To sum things up, the Honda HR-V’s impressive combination of stylish design, advanced technology, superior efficiency, and abundant utility make it a deserving recipient of our ‘Overall Car of the Year’ award – congratulations.
