The fourth generation Escape was released here in October of 2020 and it impressed with its new organic design architecture, its driveability and its high level of specification throughout the range but especially with the ST-Line X.
It has taken the better part of a year, but the range is now complete, with the arrival of the PHEV versions of which there are two; an entry level and the ST-Line X, both front-wheel-drive models.
And it’s perfect timing for the full range to be here – now’s a great time to plan holiday escapes in an Escape with the latest Ford features onboard, which includes FordPass connectivity and now, PHEV technology. With its embedded modem, FordPass Connect enhances the driver to vehicle connection, allowing remote vehicle starting, fuel checking ability, vehicle locking and unlocking functionality and service booking reminders and more, all done through the FordPass app on the owner’s phone.
The 2021 Escape is the first time Ford has introduced PHEV tech into a passenger vehicle here, technology which has already been successfully proven in the Ford Transit Custom. It uses the same four mode control system, which allows the driver to decide which mode is going to be the most effective – including 59kms of pure electric running – and which can be selected at the push of a button.
Speaking of buttons, the Ford Escape PHEV also features a Drive Select function which electronically adjusts the SUV’s ability to travel on different terrains, including snow, sand and heavy rocks as well as the road going normal, eco and sport modes, again all controlled by the driver. Most critically, as a PHEV, the fuel efficiency figure is a super low 1.5 litres per 100km for an ultra-low 33gms of CO2 per km, which – given the ST Line X’s high level of specification – means you get all the chocolate without the calories.
