New vehicle sales continued their momentum in August, with the total of 9,430 registrations, the strongest passenger vehicle sales August since 1987, and the best commercial sales since 1984!.
There were 2,602 new commercial vehicle registrations for the month compared to 2,216 this time last year, an increase of 386 units (17.4 percent ). There were 6,828 registrations of passenger vehicles for the month of August, a 14.5 percent increase over August 2012 (5,959 registrations.
Year-to-date commercial vehicle registrations are up 24.4 percent on 2012 (19,988 compared to 16,073) and new passenger vehicles 6.1 percent up on this time in 2012, an overall 10.7 percent increase for new vehicle registrations.
Says MIA CEO David Crawford: “With the year-to-date new vehicle registrations running 10.7 percent (73,279 units) ahead of this time in 2012 (66,200 units), the new car sector continues to perform at levels last seen in the 1980’s.”
For the month of August Toyota remains the market leader with 17.8 percent market share, or 1,683 registrations (1,080 passenger cars and 603 commercials). Holden was second with 11.3 percent market share (1,067 registrations), closely followed by Ford on 11 percent (1,041 registrations).
Year-to-date Toyota remains the market leader with 19.3 percent market share (14,176 registrations), Ford second with 10.9 percent market share (7,961 registrations) and Holden third with 10.2 percent market share (7,506 registrations).
The top-selling car model for the month of August remained the Toyota Corolla with 328 registrations. The Holden Cruze was second with 271 registrations followed by the Holden Commodore in third with 247 registrations.
In the commercial segment the Ford Ranger was again the top-selling model with 392 registrations, followed by the Toyota Hilux (376 registrations) and Nissan Navara (290 registrations).
For the month of August the SUV segment was the most popular with 24 percent of total registrations, reflecting the dominant position year-to-date of 27 percent of all registrations. The small passenger vehicle segment regained second spot with 21 percent of sales followed by the utility segment with 19 percent of registrations.
