Scania schools its rivals

When you’re five, you’re a big boy at school and ready to take on all comers in the playground. Scania has just turned five in New Zealand.

And as if a five-year official brand presence in the land of the long white cloud wasn’t enough, the anniversary coincides with Scania’s fourth consecutive year of number one market share for heavy trucks in New Zealand.

In 2019 Scania sold 239 trucks. By 2023 the brand expanded its sales to 645. There was 1 service centre supporting the brand in 2013 and by 2023, that total had increased to 22.

Staff also increased from 3 in 2019 to 281 by 2023.

Early team member and current Pre-Sales and Logistics Director, Rob Covich, says “the achievement is proof Scania hit the ground running when it established itself here, and the leadership team’s focus on customers-first, a nationwide service network and extensive aftersales care proved a winning formula that is still delivering today.”

Currently, there are 2905 Scania trucks on our roads and collectively, they have travelled 1.4 billion kilometres in five years.

New Scania NZ managing director, Victor Carvalho, says while the stats and achievements are impressive and well-earned, they also serve as a yardstick from which to build and improve.

“To this end, imminent investments for Scania include two additional Service Centres to come online this year in Invercargill and Hastings, with a further three or four more planned in the next three years, along with some major refurbishment plans for existing sites. We also hope to announce a strategic property acquisition soon with an eye to future-proofing our service centre network.”

“Our ongoing development of technology platforms will continue to play an important role in creating efficiencies, not just in Scania New Zealand’s business but also in our clients’ businesses,” says Carvalho.
