Vehicle sales up again

David Crawford, CEO of the Motor Industry Association says “healthy regional economies in Auckland and Christchurch combined with continued strong net immigration and competitive pricing drove the strongest new vehicles registrations in the month of April since 1982. There were 9,939 new vehicle registrations for the month of April which were up seven percent (649 units) on April 2015.”

“There were 6,789 passenger vehicle registrations and 3,150 commercial vehicle registrations, which were once again the highest month of April on record for commercial vehicle registrations” said Crawford.

Toyota was the overall market leader for the month of April with 15 percent market share (1,516 units) with Ford second on 13 percent (1,276 units) and Holden third with 8 percent (829 units).

Toyota remains the passenger car market leader for the month of April with 11 percent share (748 units), with Ford second on 10 percent (696 units) and Mazda third also with 10 percent (674 units). Toyota was also the commercial vehicle market leader with 24 percent share (768 units) followed by Ford at 18 percent (580 units) and Nissan third at 10 percent (327 units).

The Kia Sportage was the top selling passenger model with four percent market share (290 units), followed by the Mazda CX-5 on three percent (224 units) and the Toyota RAV4 on three percent (204 units).

Toyota Hilux regained its position as the monthly top selling commercial model for April with 17 percent market share (535 units) and was also the top selling model overall for the month of April.

The Ford Ranger was the second best seller with 16 percent market share (507 units) with the Nissan Navara at 10 percent (327 units). Year to date the Ford Ranger retains its lead as the top selling commercial model with 18 percent market share (2,410 units) followed by the Toyota Hilux, with 14 percent market share (1,880 units).

The top three models for the month of April were again light commercial vehicles, reflecting continued strong demand for 4x2 and 4x4 utes. The SUV segments accounted for 36 percent of vehicle registrations for the month of April followed by the Pick Up/Chassis segments with 22 percent share.

“Since January 2012, when comparing growth for the same month a year earlier the passenger sector has seen growth in 50 out of 52 months and for the commercial sector it has been 46 out of 52 months” said Crawford.
