New Small Car Test Video - 2020 Toyota Corolla Wagon

Video Road Report

We video review the all-new 2020 Toyota Corolla Wagon

Toyota has turned what most would consider a working-class car into a statement of automotive aesthetica. The Corolla wagon GX is back ladies and gentlemen, and it’s a winner!

Whereas the previous generation wagon was very definitely out on the ledge in terms of overall Toyota excellence and indeed, when it came to its competition, the current model falls into the not only incredibly practical category, but the stylishly desirable as well. European design influences have taken the Japanese domestic functionality, kept the bits that worked and refined the rest to produce the wagon seen today.

While on paper, the wagon looks like the third child of the Corolla line up – not having a hybrid variant, while the hatch and sedan do – the Corolla wagon has the distinction of being the first Toyota to accommodate Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality. So it goes the Corolla wagon has a significant amount of contemporary technology with the Toyota Safety Sense suite taking pride of place – so you have autonomous emergency brakes, lane departure with steering assist, dynamic radar cruise control, road sign recognition and automatic headlights.

What you also have is 800 litres worth of cargo space and the power of the 1.8-litre petrol engine to deliver it with fuel economy first and foremost in mind. What you also have is a wagon to be proud of, one that looks good from every angle and which exudes purpose as well as athleticism and refinement. With its good looks and design comes inherent driving refinement and the wagon is especially well balanced as a road goer.

Would a hybrid powerplant improve the wagon? Economically and eventually yes, but today’s GX model with a conventional powerplant is perfectly capable of holding its own – if not doing better – against its rivals, and that should be all buyers need to know about the Toyota Corolla wagon.
