The new generation Mitsubishi Outlander follows in the wheel-tracks of its predecessor which has historically won its fair share of awards, but for 2022, we might as well be looking at a completely new vehicle.

For its 2022 model, Mitsubishi has really outdone itself, and the shine of the Triple Diamond brand has been eclipsed by what could well be referred to as the best Mitsubishi ever produced.

Somewhat ironically, the Outlander is quite unlike any other Mitsubishi before it in terms of its powertrain options, performance, its technology, interior sophistication, comfort levels and styling.

For the 2022 model, Outlander uses a new displacement engine from Mitsubishi: a 2.5-litre mill which incorporates direct injection and Mitsubishi’s MIVEC (valve timing control) technology mated to an eight-speed stepped CVT – a new feature for Outlander – to deliver a very smooth and frugal powertrain package. 

There is also the added consideration of Mitsubishi’s PHEV technology, which is well proven and tested in both on and off-road terrains.

While many safety features such as traffic sign recognition, forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning, driver attention alert, rear cross traffic assist and lane departure warning systems are scratching the surface of the Outlander’s safety package, some innovations have been introduced.

An excellent example is the lane departure prevention system, which can have its intensity modified by the driver or the centre airbag which is used to prevent driver and passenger collision in a worst case driving scenario. 

These examples highlight the evolutionary nature of the 2022 Outlander which takes things you thought you knew about Mitsubishi’s hero SUV – then makes them better.

Outlander also offers the latest in Mitsubishi’s connective technology, with the proprietary SDA infotainment system. This brings together Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth streaming AM/FM radio and satellite navigation together through a clear and easy to use 9-inch touchscreen interface.

Additionally, the driver’s supervision screen menu is both comprehensive and intuitive.

In previous Mitsubishi seven seat vehicles, the 6th and 7th occupants have had less than wonderful accommodations, but in this generation of Outlander, the excellence in comfort and design extends from the front right the way to the back, with no short-cuts or oversights.

While the Outlander interior may not be as organic in its design as some vehicles, every element of the cabin design reflects sophistication and class, and it all comes together – as do the exterior design elements – in one cohesive and elegant package.
