With a range that spans from 2WD single cabs up to 4WD double cabs and seemingly everything in between, it would appear that the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton has a ute for virtually every kind of business or trade.
However, neatly sitting near the top of the tree is the GLX-R Double Cab, and I managed to get my hands on one to test. Not only did it come with the ute’s striking new exterior design, redesigned chassis, upgraded suspension system and powerful new 2.4-litre bi-turbo diesel engine, but mine came decked to the nines with accessories too.
Regardless of the model, the new Mitsubishi Triton features a revamped platform with increased dimensions, the length has grown by 15mm, width and wheel track by 50mm, and has an extended wheelbase that’s now 3130mm. Its robust ladder chassis offers 40 percent more bending rigidity and 60 percent more torsional rigidity, enhancing driving comfort with reduced road noise. So as you can see, it’s been improved from the ground up.
The design has become more masculine too, boasting a detailed front grille, sleek LED lights, flared arches, and distinctive 18-inch alloys. The rear includes a sturdy tailgate and a bed capable of accommodating a euro pallet, though it lacks power outlets.
Overall, the truck has a boxier silhouette, ideal for off-road performance, with respectable approach, rampover, and departure angles, while for those that like puddles, water submersion should not exceed 500mm.
But it doesn’t stop there. My specific review model also came with a body-coloured crown canopy with lift up windows, (complete with a dual drawer system and item trays) that are a tradie’s dream. A Rola roof rack, a Titan cargo tray and a towbar for its 3,500kg towing capability.
Under the hood, a 2.4-litre MIVEC biTurbo diesel engine delivers 150kW and 470Nm through a six-speed automatic gearbox and a Super Select II four-wheel-drive system (for those weekend adventures), achieving 8.8L/100km fuel efficiency and 233g/km emissions.
The spacious interior features supportive cloth seats and upscale trim materials, enhancing overall passenger comfort. It’s a seamless blend of design and functionality, providing a more spacious atmosphere, and improved noise isolation even when driving over rugged terrain.
The front offers USB-C and USB-A ports, a wireless charging pad, and ample storage, while the second row benefits from more legroom and additional stowage space. All models come with a nine-inch infotainment display, 360-degree camera that makes parking a breeze, and wireless Apple CarPlay (Android is wired) and Bluetooth capabilities, while the seven-inch digital multifunction display includes a very handy traffic-sign alert – so no speeding ticket worries for me.
Inside, the interior has been reimagined A standard nine-inch audio display and a seven-inch LCD information display in the instrument cluster ensure connectivity.
On the road, the Triton remains composed, even in adverse weather (we’ve had plenty of that recently), thanks to its forgiving suspension and even in 2WD mode, it goes about its business with flair. And for those that like to go off the beaten track, the Super Select II system includes 7 drive modes, enhancing off-road capabilities and providing terrain suggestions on the digital display, making it user-friendly for novices. Plus there’s a manual rear diff lock for when things get really mucky.
Boasting a five-star ANCAP rating, the GLX-R is not only equipped with various advanced driver assistance systems, such as adaptive cruise control, but also comes complete with Forward Collision Mitigation, Lane Departure Warning, front and rear Cross Traffic Alert and a driver distraction monitor that’s been upgraded but can be still be a little sensitive.
Overall, the new Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R offers improved towing capacity, aesthetics, technology, and performance, making it a compelling choice for those in the market for a new ute. It’s great for tradies and business owners alike and right now (until 31st December), if you buy any GLX-R or VRX, Mitsubishi will fit a ‘Beast-Pack’ of accessories (valued at $2,600) for free.
