Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 e Plug-in Hybrid Arrives in NZ

News

Mercedes-Benz is expanding its electrified offerings in New Zealand, with the GLA 250 e plug-in hybrid (PHEV) set to arrive this month, presenting a new premium option for corporate fleets. This compact SUV is positioned to meet the needs of businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and operational costs, while providing the long-range flexibility required for professional use.

Powertrain and Operational Efficiency

The GLA 250 e is built on a dual-power platform, integrating a 1.3L turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and an 11.5 kWh battery. This combination delivers a total system output of 160 kW and 450 Nm of torque, ensuring capable performance for all driving conditions.

For fleet managers, the key metric is the WLTP-tested all-electric range of up to 65 km. This capability allows for the average daily commute to be completed on purely electric power, which can translate into significant fuel savings and lower vehicle emissions across a fleet. For longer business trips that extend beyond the electric range, the petrol engine provides the necessary backup, eliminating range anxiety and ensuring operational continuity.

The vehicle comes standard with a 3.7 kW AC charging system, with an available option to upgrade to a faster 11 kW unit. This upgrade could be a practical consideration for high-use vehicles to minimize downtime and maximize electric-only driving.

Standard Equipment and Safety

Reflecting its premium positioning, the GLA 250 e is generously equipped from the factory, which simplifies the procurement process. Standard features relevant to a corporate fleet include:

Comprehensive Safety Suite: A 360° camera, DISTRONIC Active Distance Assist, and Blind Spot Assist are included as standard, supporting driver safety and a company's duty-of-care obligations.
Driver Comfort and Convenience: Standard heated and memory front seats, the KEYLESS-GO package, and wireless device charging enhance the daily experience for employees.
Efficiency Monitoring: The digital displays feature hybrid-specific readouts, allowing drivers and fleet managers to monitor energy consumption and flow effectively

Specification and Tiering Options

For organisations that operate a tiered vehicle policy, two key optional packages allow for further customisation:

AMG Line Package: For a more executive look and feel, this package adds sports seats, a Nappa leather steering wheel, and sports-oriented suspension and braking systems.
Plus Package: Aimed at senior staff or tech-focused roles, this package can be added on top of the AMG Line and includes a Burmester Surround Sound System, a head-up display, and MBUX Augmented Reality for navigation.

The Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 e offers a compelling proposition for New Zealand fleets. It effectively serves as a zero-emission electric vehicle for daily urban and suburban use, while retaining the unrestricted range of a conventional petrol car for longer journeys. The combination of potential running cost reductions, a high level of standard safety and technology, and the strong residual values associated with the brand make it a strategic option for businesses looking to transition towards electrification.
