BMW tops premium segment for the second year running in New Zealand

BMW has finished on the top step of the podium in the New Zealand premium segment for sales in 2025 for the second year running.

The brand achieved 1,786 registrations of new BMWs last year, representing a 20.4 per cent increase on the year before. This also meant BMW outpaced total industry growth of 11.6 per cent. Models across the spectrum assisted in driving the sales growth. The 1 Series Hatch recorded a 60 per cent increase, while registrations of the X1 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV)
achieved a 39 per cent uptick.

The fourth generation BMW X3 found favour with a host of customers following its launch earlier in the year. The X3 finished 2025 with 243 registrations, which marked a 121 per cent increase. The larger X5 – traditionally a favourite in New Zealand – was also up 24 per cent. There were additionally strong gains for the 3 Series Touring (up 22 per cent) and the fully electric BMW iX (up 83 per cent).

In addition, New Zealand continued as one of the world’s top markets for BMW M. A double-digit percentage sales increase meant 22.8 per cent of all BMWs sold in New Zealand wore an M badge – the third highest in the world.

The MINI brand, which rocketed to a 17.7 per cent sales increase worldwide in 2025, also finished the year in positive fashion on a local level. Registrations in total were up 4.9 per cent, while fully electric models were up an impressive 138.7 per cent.

BMW Group New Zealand Managing Director Francois Roca remarked that a compelling product strategy, underpinned by strong a collaboration with the BMW and MINI dealer network, was the key to achieving such positive results during the year.
“We were delighted to see sales growth for our brands and many different model lines across a number of segments in 2025,” Mr. Roca said.

“It confirms our product strategy is effective, combined with the strength of the partnership with our dealers across the country to deliver outstanding solutions for our customers.

“This success lays a strong foundation for 2026 – a year we will launch the BMW Neue Klasse in the local market. The first Neue Klasse models will go on sale in mid-2026, marking a major step forward for the brand as BMW showcases its credentials as a pioneer in design, digitalisation and circularity, setting new benchmarks for the industry.”
