Brake, the road safety charity, is urging organisations with staff who drive for work to address their road risk and implement measures that help to reduce incidents. The charity is running a free online session for professionals with responsibility for at-work drivers, on the topic of leadership in fleet safety.

The webinar takes place on Tuesday 30 April, 2pm-3pm NZST, as part of the run up to Road Safety Week in NZ (6-12 May).

Driving is one of the riskiest things many people do on a daily basis, and for many companies it is a critical health & safety risk. Putting policies and procedures in place to address road risk is vital to help protect the lives of staff and other road users, and to reduce incidents involving at-work drivers.

The webinar is open to health & safety staff, fleet managers, senior management staff, and anyone else with responsibility for at-work drivers at their organisation. The webinar will focus on effective leadership for fleet safety and speakers will discuss:

·         why it’s important to prioritise fleet safety and the benefits of doing so

·         what effective leadership looks like

·         measures that employers can implement to address the safety of drivers and vehicles; and

·         how engaging with local communities, advocating for change, and taking part in events such as Road Safety Week can bring about real road safety change

Attendance is free. To register, book online, or email info@brake.org.nz. Find out more about the event at: https://globalfleetchampions.org/events/leadership-in-fleet-safety-new-zealand/.

Caroline Perry, Brake’s NZ director, said: “Driving for work is a significant health and safety risk to organisations, so it’s essential that you have relevant policies and procedures in place to address risk. There are many measures you can put in place to help you reduce incidents involving at-work drivers but they require effective leadership from management in order to achieve buy-in from staff throughout your organisation. This webinar will provide information and advice on the importance of leadership, and measures you can put in place to address your risk, as well as how engaging in community activities can help you to gain support from staff and your wider community. The webinar is suitable for organisations operating fleets of any size and type, with any size of budget, and I urge anyone with staff who drive on work purposes to attend.”

This webinar is being held in the run-up to Road Safety Week 2019, which has the theme Save Lives #SpeakUp. It coincides with the UN Global Road Safety Week which has the same theme. Organisations are encouraged to take part in the week and access free resources to help them share road safety messages. Further information on the week can be found at www.roadsafetyweek.org.nz.
