Efficiency, power and safety all in one compact SUV

New models

Efficiency + Power is the mantra for the all-new MG ZS Hybrid+ and as we discovered at the NZ launch, it’s all that PLUS excellent value too.

The all-new MG ZS Hybrid+ is exactly that, all-new. In fact (just as with the MG3 and HS) the only thing that is the same from the previous model is the name. It is a vehicle that’s been designed from the ground up to meet the challenges of  contemporary city living with style, power, and sustainability. This is a compact SUV that redefines what it means to be an all-rounder.

The MG ZS Hybrid+ sports a completely revamped look, aligning it with the stylish cues of the MG3 and the all-new HS. An MG family grille, chrome lip spoiler, and distinctive ‘eyelid’ LED DRLs emphasise its modernised aesthetic. Coupled with its
increased dimensions (109mm longer and 9mm wider over the previous gen) the ZS Hybrid+ offers a commanding road presence.

Underneath its sleek exterior, the MG ZS Hybrid+ hosts a powertrain that sets the standard for its class. Its combination of a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine and a robust electric motor delivers an impressive 158kW of power and 465Nm of torque, making city driving and highway cruising equally exhilarating. The intelligent hybrid system, which utilises a 1.83kWh battery, offers the benefit of hybrid technology without the hassle of frequent charging, all the while achieving remarkable efficiency  with a WLTP figure of just 5.2L/100km.

This 5.2L figure MG were keen to emphasise as being WLTP and not the likes of 3P, (ie read the small print on competitors)
and add that this was a conservative result with ‘real world’ numbers being even lower – your accountant will be pleased.

This vehicle isn’t just about performance; it’s a thoughtful nod toward a greener future. The self-charging hybrid system negates the need for plug-in charging, offering a practical yet environmentally friendly driving option.

Inside, the cabin is a statement of thoughtful design and comfort. A hexagonal theme with large 12.3-inch infotainment and
instrument displays suggests futurism, while perforated PVC seats provide tactile comfort. The interior is spacious, with  ample storage solutions and a panoramic roof that enhances its airy feel. Notably, the 25mm extension in wheelbase  translates into improved cabin space and added stability on the road.

The MG ZS Hybrid+’s practicality is further highlighted by its impressive boot space, 443L with all seats up, which expands to 1457L with seats down. These enhancements make it perfectly suited for urban adventures and family outings alike.

The MG Pilot Suite elevates safety to new heights with features like Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The suite is comprehensive, including Intelligent Cruise Assist and Blind Spot Detection, all of which enhance confidence and awareness on every journey, whether in congested city traffic or on open country roads.

Technology doesn’t stop at safety. The i-Smart app is a smart feature that ensures connectivity with your vehicle, allowing for remote control of various functions such as checking tire pressure, unlocking doors, or setting the air conditioning right from  your smartphone.

As part of the launch we were handed the keys and given a few hours to go where we pleased, so with that we headed north from the city, and ventured towards the coast.

The first thing you notice is the smoothness of the powertrain. On SH1 I engaged the adaptive cruise control and let the Hybrid+ do its thing. It’s an incredibly smart system that acts as an EV with the ICE engine providing power to the battery which in-turn powers the electric motor that then drives the wheels. UNLESS, the control unit decides that the ZS needs more power and the ICE engine can either help the electric motor or send power directly to the wheels. It may sound complicated, but all you have to do is push down on the accelerator and enjoy the ride (the Hybrid+ does all the rest).

The big surprise for me was that at 100km/h, I looked at the digital rev gauge and noticed zero, yes zero revs, so essentially,
battery power only – smart and fuel-saving!

Off the highway the steering is positive and visibility is excellent, and although we didn’t put it through its paces excessively in the corners, it felt both nimble and firm, with minimal body roll.

The cabin space is larger than I expected (for a compact SUV), however, the door cards were a little slim for resting elbows on. The digital screens offer exceptional quality in terms of data and graphics and the overall fit and finish was premium, I particularly liked the optional white interior.

Oh and while on the subject of colour, there are numerous exterior options available (with Emerald Green being a hero), we had the Brighton blue which I understand is battersea blue in the UK – I think I prefer the Brighton connotations IMHO.

The all-new MG ZS Hybrid+ blends reasonable performance, practicality, and eco-friendliness seamlessly. Designed from
scratch and sporting a new look, it not only caters to the demands of urban living but does so with flair, featuring advanced tech and a robust build, it’s really out to spruce up the segment.

What’s more, the MG ZS Hybrid+ offers exceptional value in its segment, available in two well-equipped trims, the ‘fleet-friendly’ ZS Hybrid+ Excite starting at $36,990+ORC, and ZS Hybrid+ Essence at $39,990+ORC. Coupled with an unprecedented 10-year/250,000km warranty.
