Volkswagen’s Touareg has long been a stalwart in the brand’s lineup, holding its ground as one of the most robust and capable SUVs in the market. Now, in its third generation, the Touareg receives a mid-cycle refresh for the 2024 model year, bringing with it a host of updates and a PHEV R variant.
Since its inception in 2002, it has garnered over a million sales worldwide, solidifying its status as a key player in Volkswagen’s portfolio. Developed alongside esteemed stablemates such as the Audi Q8, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus, the Touareg may have evolved over the years, but it remains a hefty SUV that is a goto towing vehicle for many.
The 2024 refresh marks a significant milestone for the Touareg, with Volkswagen not only refreshing the exterior but also introducing the R variant, which stands as the most powerful production SUV in the brand’s history. Furthermore, this R variant is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), underscoring Volkswagen’s commitment to sustainability and technological innovation.
Alongside the introduction of the R PHEV variant, Volkswagen retains two familiar models from the pre-facelift generation: the V6 and V6S R-Line. These models offer varying levels of performance and equipment, catering to different consumer preferences.
However, it’s the R variant that steals the spotlight. Powered by a potent combination of a 3L V6 engine and a 100kW electric motor, the Touareg R delivers an impressive 340kW of power and 700Nm of torque. This powertrain propels the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, while also offering impressive fuel efficiency and emissions figures.
While the overall dimensions remain unchanged, Volkswagen has given the Touareg a fresh aesthetic. A new split-grille design dominates the front fascia, accentuated by LED headlights with an improved IQ matrix system. The R variant receives exclusive styling cues, including a distinctive bumper, however, whichever Touareg you opt for, they all come with an illuminated red VW logo on the rear light bar.
At the heart of the Touareg’s refresh lies its interior upgrades. The infotainment system and instrument cluster have been merged into a large and cohesive, haptic touch experience, dubbed the “inner vision cockpit” by Volkswagen. This intuitive interface provides access to a plethora of features and functions, enhancing the overall driving experience.
The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg represents a significant step forward for the SUV. With its refreshed design, advanced technology, and potent powertrain options, it remains a compelling choice in the highly competitive SUV segment. Whether it’s the practicality of the V6 Diesel models or the exhilarating performance of the R variant, the Touareg continues to offer something for every discerning driver.
