All-new LEXUS RZ lands in New Zealand with Steer-by-wire and yoke steering

New models

Lexus has confirmed the arrival of the all-new Lexus RZ in New Zealand, with vehicles arriving at Lexus dealerships nationwide.

The new RZ introduces Lexus’ revolutionary steer-by-wire system and yoke steering wheel, changing how the vehicle is driven and experienced. Together, they deliver more precise control, easier manoeuvring and a more intuitive connection between the driver and the road.

Making its first public appearance at the recent ASB Classic, the updated all-electric SUV brings advanced performance, charging and refinement, with driver-focused technology at the centre of the experience.

The line-up is led by the RZ 550e F SPORT, the most powerful RZ offered in New Zealand, alongside the RZ 500e Dynamic.
“The new RZ is a big step forward for Lexus electrification,” says Andrew Davis, Vice President of Lexus New Zealand.

“It delivers more power, improved range and faster charging, while introducing steering technology that genuinely changes how the vehicle feels to drive.”

The Lexus RZ is the first Lexus model to adopt steer-by-wire technology. It is fitted as standard on the RZ 550e F SPORT and available as an option on the RZ 500e Dynamic.

By removing the traditional mechanical steering connection, steer-by-wire allows the steering to respond more naturally to speed and driving conditions. Paired with the compact yoke steering wheel, drivers can achieve full steering lock without crossing hands, making low-speed manoeuvring easier while delivering better precision and stability at higher speeds. The design also opens up space for the driver with more leg room, improved visibility and easier entry and exit.

“Around town it feels light and precise, and on the open road it’s smooth and stable,” says Andrew. “The yoke gives you a clearer view ahead and more space in the cabin, and despite being new technology, it feels natural from the first drive.”

Performance has stepped up across the range. The RZ 550e F SPORT produces a maximum system output of 300kW, making it the most powerful RZ in the New Zealand lineup, while the RZ 500e Dynamic delivers a total system output of 280kW, an increase of 50kW.

Both models benefit from a revised battery electric system, including a higher-capacity battery and a 22kW onboard AC charger. Lexus has also introduced enhanced battery thermal management to optimise charging performance across a wider range of conditions for everyday use.

The RZ 550e F SPORT brings a more performance-focused setup, with sports suspension tuning, aerodynamic detailing and unique interior and exterior design elements. It also introduces Lexus’ Interactive Manual Drive, enabling drivers to select an eight-speed virtual gear system via paddle shifters

“The updated RZ delivers improved real-world driving range, alongside faster and more consistent charging,” says Andrew.
Inside, the cabin remains distinctly Lexus, with a focus on quiet comfort, premium materials and a clean, driver-focused layout.

“This is still very much a Lexus,” says Andrew. “You get advanced technology and strong performance, but it’s delivered with the comfort, quality and attention to detail our customers expect.”

With vehicles starting to arrive in dealerships, the all-new Lexus RZ represents the next stage of Lexus’ electrified journey in New Zealand, bringing a new driving experience to the brand’s latest SUV.
